Guide to the Civic District Singapore
Victoria Theatre and Victoria Memorial Hall, classical architecture.

Historic colonial monuments intertwine with modern Singapore at the heart of Singapore, the Marina Bay. The water-fronting Marina Bay District and the historic Singapore River are a blend of heritage and modernity. The Merlion is positioned at the intercept of the Marina Bay and Singapore River, guarding the historically important Singapore River which contributed Singapore to be a thriving British trading port in the 1800s. The Singapore River meanders through the vibrant Boat Quay, Clarke Quay and Robertson Quay, lined with shophouses housing international restaurants. The uninitiated would have never known that these shophouses were once the godowns during the British colonial time. The coolies would unload the goods from the bum boats and stored them at the godowns.

Among towering skyscrapers and busy streets now are architectural wonders such as the Esplanade, iconic Singapore Flyer and modern-engineered Marina Bay Sands, all unbelievably built on reclaimed land. Do you know that the Marina Bay is a reservoir which stores fresh water for drinking? The Marina Barrage dam separates the sea water from this freshwater, all the way to Robertson Quay and beyond. A beautiful and famous Gardens by the Bay is  built next to the Marina Barrage that we strongly recommend visiting.
