Celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival in Singapore

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, the air in Singapore is filled with excitement and anticipation. This vibrant celebration holds a special place in Singapore’s cultural roots, showcasing the rich heritage of our Chinese community. The celebration marks an end to the autumn harvest season and to give thanks to the Almighty for a prosperous time. It is also noticed that during this festival, the moon is generally at its brightest and beautiful. In recent years, this is also a time when many families and friends gather and enjoy the festivities around the country.

When is it celebrated?

The Mid-Autumn Festival, Zhongqiu Jie (中秋节) in Chinese, also known as the Mooncake Festival or Moon Festival, is one of the most popular festivals in Singapore. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar – that generally corresponds to late September to early October of the Gregorian calendar. 

Who is it about?

The most popular legend of the Mid-Autumn Festival is The Story of Chang’e and Houyi. Chang’e is a central character of the tradition. As Goddess of the Moon, she is remembered during the festival. How is it celebrated?

In Singapore, with its majority of people of Chinese descent, the Mid-Autumn Festival carries many of the same customs as those in China. However, there are some activities that are uniquely Singaporean –  children hang colorful lanterns in many places around the country in the weeks leading up to the occasion. Sending mooncakes to family and friends is a meaningful way to show gratitude. Some also gather on the beach to admire the full moon, which illuminates the sea in an enchanting way. During the night, streets such as Chinatown come alive with bazaars and carnivals offering traditional and modern mooncakes, decorative ornaments, preserved fruits, potted plants, clothing, and more – making the Mid-Autumn Festival a truly memorable celebration.

Where is it celebrated?
