Welcoming Lunar New year 2024!

The air is filled with excitement and joy as the Chinese in Singapore are busily preparing for the coming of the Chinese Lunar New Year. Also known as the Spring Festival or the Chinese New Year, this annual celebration holds great significance in the Chinese culture. It is a time when family member come together and bond over conversation and traditional food. 

 

 

Each year is symbolised by one of the twelve animals that make up the Chinese zodiac. Lunar Year 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, specifically the Wooden Dragon. In Chinese culture, the sign of the Dragon symbolizes power, strength, and good fortune. 

 

 

The Chinese New Year falls on 10 Feb 2024, Saturday. The following Sunday, 11 February 2024 and Monday, 12 February 2024 are public holidays in Singapore. Go visit your Chinese friends this extended weekend and have fun! 

 

In the weeks preceding Chinese New Year, numerous events take place for the Chinese to prepare and celebrate the festival. Come join them!

 

1. Dahlia Dreams 2024

 

 

Enjoy the full bloom in Gardens by the Bay’s. This year’s Chinese New Year floral display showcases a 7-metre tall dragon that stretches over 15 metres. It was made up of thousand of dahlias in different shapes, sizes and colors, fresh and preserved. Further enhancing the dragon theme is a towering dragon sculpture made out of hardwood and recycled steel, a creation of British-born sculptor James Doran-Webb. This masterful artwork is the newest addition to his zodiac character series in Flower Dome.

 

Four colourful dragon lanterns add to this joyous event, each symbolising the four elements namely metal, water, fire and earth. The display also features a scene that translates into “carps leap over the dragon gate”, a metaphor for courage and the pursuit of greatness.

2. River Hongbao 2024

 

 

The River Hongbao is a highly-anticipated event which is an exciting blend of Chinese history and culture.

 

The famous Gardens by the Bay will host an amazing 140-meter-long dragon lantern display to celebrate the Year of the Dragon which is a representation of strength, power, and good fortune. Thirty eight-meter-long firecrackers will be on show during the occasion, adding even more grandeur and excitement to the Chinese New Year festival.

 

The River Hongbao event, which is well-known for its majesty and energy, is welcoming everyone to join in the fun by providing free entrance.

3. Chingay Parade Singapore 2024: Blossom

 

 

 

Blossom is the theme for this year Chingay, a colourful costume and masquerade parade.  The Chingay Parade 2024 aims to bring like-minded individuals together to bond and build a sense of community.

 

The flowers scattered during the parade signifies unity, togetherness and an appreciation for talents. The Chingay showcases an array of costumes and special effects. Flowers will be taking centre stage as the vibrant and versatile motif.

 

A 230-meter interactive floor projection will be available for visitors to fully immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and visuals of the beautiful Chingay Garden. Visit PAssionArts Street to witness art in its purest form and find an ideal location for taking pictures. 
Art installations made of recycled materials by students in primary and secondary schools nwill be displayed. Do not miss any of these at the Chingay Parade!

4. Chinatown’s Chinese New Year Celebration 2024

 

 

 

Our Chinatown Chinese New Year 2024 features vibrant performances and activities with the theme of: Soaring Into The Auspicious Dragon Year”.

 

Experience the Chinese culture and history through fairs, street light up ceremony, lion dance competition, stage performances, lantern adoptions and countdown celebration.
