Deepavali, also popularly known as the “Festival of Lights”, is derived from the Sanskrit word “dipavali,” meaning “row of lights”. This festivity symbolises the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil. It is one of the most widely celebrated Festivals in Singapore.
This year’s celebration of the most vibrant and colourful Hindu Festival – Deepavali or Diwali, will fall on 12 November 2023 (Sunday), but on 13 November 2023, Monday will be a Public Holiday.
In celebration of Deepavali, various activities are happening in Little India. From mesmerising light displays to delicious traditional delicacies, it is the best time to explore the colourful and rich heritage of Indians. 1. Light-Up Display
Serangoon Road and Race Course Road are beautifully lit yearly with eye-catching decorations and stunning light displays. The attraction is free for all. It will continue daily from 1pm to midnight until 13 November 2023. Take it and plan your evening stroll!
2. Food Bazaar
Indulge your taste buds in mouth-watering Indian dishes from street vendors offering an array of delectable treats. Remember to feast on their famous Biryani and Murukku. The food bazaar is happening at Poli@Clive Street. The food bazaar is open daily from 2pm to 10pm until 13 November 2023.
3. Festival Village
Watch the streets of Campbell Lane come to life with the lineup of performances, including traditional music, dance, and captivating artistic displays that pay tribute to the rich Indian heritage. The Festival Village is also the place for all those who love shopping. Street merchants offer traditional clothing, tasty snacks, intricate handicrafts, and festive decorations that embody the heart of this celebration. The Festival Village is open daily from 10am to 10pm until 9 November and 10am to 1am on 10-11 November 2023.
4. Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple
Visit one of Singapore’s oldest Hindu temples on Serangoon Road, the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple. It is a popular destination for locals and tourists who come to enjoy its unique atmosphere during Deepavali celebrations. During the festival, thousands of diyas (lamps) light up the temple, creating a serene and sacred ambience. Special prayers and ceremonies throughout the day allow visitors to connect with their spiritual side.
